About me

In the Autumn of 2023, I completed my PhD in Sociology with the title: The Experience of Waiting for Gender-Affirming Care in England: Emotions, Temporality, and Coping. During that time, I was an executive member of the University of Essex's LGBTQ+ Society for three years where I helped design and lead many activities and events for the community. I also founded and chaired the students' Trans Forum, during which I helped campaign for and achieve positive changes for trans+ students including more gender-neutral toilets and name change policies. I hold a BSc and an MSc is Psychology, and am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (this is a teaching qualification I achieved while teaching Psychology at The University of Essex during my PhD). Copies of these documents are available on request.

Post-graduating, I continue to commit to the trans+ community by volunteering for the LGBTQ+ charity ELOP as a support group facilitator.  Along the my, way I've seen outright and repressed anger from trans+ people about our social position, how our health care works, and all matters of life. There's no suitable space for that anger because of the social unacceptability of displaying anger, particularly at services designed to provide healthcare. The virtual space I offer is the space to be emotional, far removed from a formal healthcare setting.

This is me in my home, where I hold the sessions.

Ranting space

My service offers one-on-one sessions tailored to the unique needs of each individual. With a focus on confidentiality and no consequences from form of expression, I aim to provide a space where trans+ people can freely express themselves. In ranting, you can purge all of the thoughts about trans+ life, or anything that's on your mind. In recombobulating, you can focus on a pre-set list of topics or we can discover something new together. Choose one session type or both.

  • Ranting and/or Recombobulating sessions.
  • Individually tailored knowledge topics.
  • Complete privacy and confidentiality.

Recombobulation space

  • Trans+ basics: language, healthcare info, name change and other documents.
  • Locating and using positive distractions.
  • Locating and expanding your resources and hobbies.
  • Planning for the short and long term.
  • Reacting positively against dysphoria.
  • Cooking, baking, gardening, housekeeping,
  • Guy things.
  • Info dump on me.
  • Tell me your interest and I'll build a session for you.

What sessions look like

In either session type, I will introduce myself and affirm the nature of the service as an informal supportive space.

I will then ask if you have any questions and address those.

In the ranting space, I will invite you to speak, starting at any place you like.  I actively listen to you and acknowledge your experiences.  This is the space to get into all of what's bothering you. On your request, I may or may not be able to offer some specific assistant or support. There will be some areas that I will not be able to offer assistance, due to my lacking knowledge or qualification.

In the recombobulation space, we will have had a discussion of your area of interest and zone in on a specific goal for you by email before the session. I will then gather materials to make this goal more achievable. Then we will have a virtual session and look at the materials together. The options above are goals and skills I know about and have achieved, but I'm way more interested in what you want to know or do.
